Tokyo-based Mitsui Chemicals has acquired a minority stake in Canadian startup Materia Bioworks, targeting artificial intelligence and computational chemistry as tools to accelerate the development and commercialization of sustainable materials.

Toronto-based Materia Bioworks has developed MAPS (Material Application Prediction System), an AI-driven platform designed to streamline the development of sustainable materials, including bioplastics.

AI Targets Bioplastic Development Challenges

Bioplastic development has traditionally involved significant time and cost, creating a barrier to broader commercialization. Materia Bioworks aims to address this challenge by combining AI with computational chemistry to streamline material design and formulation.

The approach could help reduce development costs and, in turn, support efforts to lower the cost of bioplastics.

MAPS Covers Multiple Development Stages

Material Design

MAPS uses AI to formulate and design bioplastics according to specified performance requirements. These include thermal, mechanical, permeability and other physical properties.

Manufacturing Optimization

The platform uses digital twins to simulate customer production lines and recommend processing and manufacturing conditions intended to optimize production.

Supplier Marketplace

A proprietary marketplace connects customers with verified bioplastic suppliers, supporting access to materials required for development and production.

Compliance Support

MAPS also provides regulatory support through a database covering biomaterials and biodegradable materials, helping companies navigate bioplastic approval requirements across different countries.

Mitsui Chemicals Targets Global Bioplastic Expansion

For Mitsui Chemicals, the investment is intended to help deploy its biomass-based materials through Materia Bioworks’ AI-driven platform and expand its global bioplastic offering.

The companies also plan to explore joint development opportunities. Potential collaboration could focus on creating new bioplastic materials designed around specific customer performance and quality requirements.

Combining Materials Expertise With AI

The partnership brings together Mitsui Chemicals’ materials and technology capabilities with Materia Bioworks’ AI-based material design platform. The companies aim to use this combination to make sustainable materials more efficient to develop and bring to market.
